Our philosophy

Our goal is to gain a working knowledge of the science and logistics of your problem, while simultaneously giving you a working knowledge of the statistical theory and methods that we suggest. We believe that the most efficient and effective way to achieve this is to develop a collaborative relationship. This means that the statistical work will be performed either by you or together with the statistician. In particular, you should not expect the statistician to do the work for you.

What we offer

We provide assistance in all statistical aspects of research, including:

  • preparation of grant proposals
  • planning before data collection
  • analysis of preliminary data
  • revision of study design
  • analysis of data prior to manuscript preparation or resubmission
  • interpreting results
  • writing reports, manuscripts and presentations
  • addressing reviewer comments
  • development of a method new to your field for data analysis
  • data visualization
  • software use, including R, SAS, Python, Julia, JMP, Prism, etc.
  • deciding if a method or package is appropriate for your analysis

Fee Agreement Information

If you are interested in setting up an agreement, the first step is to email us at statconsulting@stat.wisc.edu to request a meeting. The Group Manager will respond with some possible meeting times. The purpose of the meeting is for us to outline what we offer, and to learn a bit more about what you need. If an agreement seems appropriate for both parties, then:

For parties affiliated with UW–Madison that are not currently eligible

You must also complete a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). These are good-faith agreements that outline the parties involved, time frame, cost, and billing information. Download an MoU template below:

(All templates are provided as a starting point for potential clients. A meeting with our team is required before finalizing the agreement.)

The fee for clients paying with a UW funding string is $95/hour, generally invoiced on July 1 and on January 1, and at any other time that you request (for example, if you have a grant ending and need to use the money). We keep track of the hours used, and by whom. There is no overhead or up-front fixed cost. You only pay for what you use.

For parties outside of UW–Madison

The next step is to draft a contract, and if applicable, a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). These are legally-binding contracts that will be agreed upon by both UW—Madison Office of Legal Affairs and your legal team, that outline the parties involved, time frame, cost, and billing information. See templates here:

The fee for clients outside of UW is $220/hour, generally invoiced monthly. We keep track of the hours used. There is no overhead or up-front fixed cost. You only pay for what you use.

Frequently asked questions

What if our unit sets up an agreement but later, no one in our unit actually needs to consult with the Statistical Consulting group? Will my group be charged at the end of the invoice period?

No, you will not be charged anything. You only pay for what you use. In this case, at invoice time (January 1 or July 1), you will receive notification that your group’s usage was 0 hours.

Our department would like to set up an agreement. Can we get a breakdown of usage by lab or by faculty / principal investigator as part of the invoice at the end of each invoice period?

Yes. In this case, please let us know the list of labs and PIs in your unit, when we set up the fee agreement. Our intake form asks for the PI name when someone requests to meet with us.

Do I have to provide a UW-funding string when setting up a fee-agreement, to benefit from the internal rate?

Yes. Any UW-funding string is acceptable.

At invoice time, can my group pay from a different funding string than the one provided in the fee agreement?

Yes, so long as it is a UW-funding string.
