Instructor information for uploading large videos online outlining potential issues and solutions.
- Large video / lecture capture / screen recording files are too big to go to Canvas directly.
Upload to Mediaspace with Kaltura (to embed in your Canvas course): https://kb.wisc.edu/luwmad/page.php?id=42443
- If uploading content to Kaltura doesn’t work, try instead Box, Google Drive, or even YouTube. Any of these tools could be more robust to high traffic. Uploading a video to YouTube is super easy: create an account for yourself, preferably using your wisc.edu google account, then click on “create” (near top right). One advantage to using YouTube is that students can choose to stream your video with very low resolution, if their internet access is poor (gear icon on bottom right, or ⋮ menu in the top right on mobile device > quality > 144p, say).
Information for instructors teaching remotely regarding low bandwidth issues and solutions.
- Living document for tips on how to teach in low bandwidth environments: https://go.wisc.edu/39vg6p
- If you have a Windows workstation in your office and want to connect to it remotely, see this “how to” from the CS lab: https://csl.cs.wisc.edu/services/remote-access/windows-remote-desktop-howto . It might be easier to move large video files around from there, than from a home, if your home internet is slow.
- Kaltura is experiencing long processing wait times to upload videos until they are accessible, due to current very heavy usage. We suggest using different methods to record & share your content. DoIT recommends to use Kaltura *only* for recordings that truly require capturing what’s on the screen, and that are short (5-10 min videos). Also, viewing content saved/uploaded directly on Canvas may eventually become congested and slow to access as well (this is not an issue yet). See alternatives below, for non-Kaltura recording and uploading.
- Upload videos to Box or Google drive, and then embedded into Canvas. How to, using Box: https://kb.wisc.edu/84747
- PowerPoint with audio narration (you get PowerPoint from campus: https://kb.wisc.edu/43841). on Windows: https://blendedtoolkit.wisc.edu/develop/creating-narrated-presentations-with-powerpoint-for-windows, and on Mac OS: https://blendedtoolkit.wisc.edu/develop/creating-narrated-presentations-with-powerpoint-for-mac/ . Make sure you export/save as a video. If you upload them as a PowerPoint on Canvas, the audio would be missing.
- Record lecture using the built-in feature in BB Collaborate. You can share the recordings with your students later.
- Mac screen recording via QuickTime: https://support.apple.com/guide/quicktime-player/record-your-screen-qtp97b08e666/mac
- Windows screen recording via the xbox app in Windows 10 or with VLC media player in later versions: https://techviral.net/record-screen-in-windows-10-without-any-software/
