We are excited to invite you to be a part of a fund-raising opportunity that would benefit the MANRRS program, and potentially other organizations at UW who serve underrepresented students, particularly in STEM. MANRRS will be holding a non-profit partner kickoff event at Delta Beer Lab on Wednesday, September 8, at 5:00-6:30pm. Guests who attend this evening, and all throughout the month of September, are offered the opportunity to support the featured non-profit partner.
As a socially conscious local business, Delta Beer Lab does not accept tips in their taproom as they pay employees a living wage and participate in revenue sharing. Any “tips” throughout each month are gathered and presented to a local non-profit partner each month. Over the last two years, they have raised over $60k for local non-profit partners in the Madison area and are a gathering space for all members of the Madison community and the space is science themed! We are excited and honored to be chosen as the September non-profit partner!
Funds will be used for student programming, professional development and opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students affiliated with MANRRS. We are also in the process of developing a relationship with Delta Beer Lab to explore opportunities presented by their support of non-profit organizations related to the industry they represent. As a matter of fact, a local business in Madison affiliated with the animal and agriculture industry suggested this partnership. With programs like Food Science, Microbiology, and the Fermentation certificate in CALS, we certainly have some career exploration interest in this collaboration. We are participating this month as the featured organization as part of their non-profit partner program because the Dairy Expo will be kicking off at the end of the month.
We would love for you to consider coming, and to bring a friend, for a number of reasons:
- The potential gift that would go to MANRRS will support students in the organization to engage in meaningful professional development and skill building activities.
- Depending on the level of the gift, MANRRS would be open to sharing with other organizations at UW-Madison that may have program needs.
- Finally, this will be a great time and opportunity to have fun by socializing with colleagues to engage in networking (Sci/Med GRS, MOSAIC, MD Coordinators, Advisors, etc.) as we get ready for the academic year, and maybe celebrate accomplishments from the summer (i.e. SOAR, and surviving our busy lives).
Please stop by even if you don’t plan to contribute to the gift, but any amount (.50c, $1, etc.) is appreciated. Part of the goal is to introduce you to Delta Beer Lab, as they can be a place for your group or organization to host a meeting off-campus. Masks are encouraged, and efforts to distance by use of the facilities (indoor and outdoor) are available. We look forward to seeing you there.
Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS), is a national organization with over 70 chapters designed to provide professional development and networking opportunities for traditionally underrepresented students to meet industry partners and those in higher education. For students in the UW-Madison chapter, many have used their participation to secure job and internship opportunities, as well as graduate and post-doctoral connections.
