WISTATS NEWS

Greetings!

Hello from Madison! We hope this e-newsletter finds you well during our time of coming back together.

This past academic year the Department of Statistics continued to see growth even as we went through the pandemic. We celebrated the new data science major and the recently approved data science certificate. The data science major has been the fastest growing major at UW. There are currently 438 students declared in the new major.

Moving nearly 50 courses, advising, and the Statistics Learning Center online was a huge accomplishment this past year. Our faculty and staff are credited for working diligently in getting our same caliber of teaching online as it has been for in-person classes. The challenges from the past year have taught us that we are a team capable of adapting to the surrounding environment and we are a team that continues to look forward.

Over the year, we welcomed new staff and faculty to support our ever-growing student population. In May 2021, the Statistics faculty elected Professor Yazhen Wang to serve as the next department chair. Please congratulate Professor Wang as he starts his tenure as chair in August 2021. We are also excited to come back together to see what the future brings for the Department of Statistics and we will continue to bring you on our journey.

On, Wisconsin!
